ABOUT THIS MASTERCLASS
Every relationship carries two agreements. The first one you made out loud: we'll support each other, care for each other, show up for each other. The second one was never spoken. It lives largely or wholly outside of awareness, and it governs your aliveness, your desire, and how fully you inhabit your body.
I call it the Erotic Contract.
If it could speak directly, it might say: I will want only what keeps us comfortable. You are responsible for making me feel desired. I'll put away the aliveness that disturbs us.
Nobody signed it. Nobody negotiated it. Yet it is fully enforced.
You have one whether or not you're partnered.
If you're partnered, your contract is live. You may not have considered what you've created together, or even known it was there, but it's operating on a daily basis.
If you're single, your contract is with an imagined future partner: when I meet someone, then I'll feel alive, then I'll want openly.
If you're dating, you're deciding right now whether to arrive as yourself or hand yourself over, piece by piece, as the price of being chosen.
If you're leaving a relationship, you're discovering what you agreed to, though you may have never realized you did—and meeting parts of yourself you haven't seen in years.
What we cover in this masterclass
Widening the definition of the erotic. Following Audre Lorde, we begin by taking the erotic back from its narrow definition. The erotic is life force—the spark of life as it moves through us. It is felt in the body as wanting, desiring, longing, excitement, inspiration, creativity, arousal, a sense of the divine. If you relegate the erotic to the sexual part of your life alone, you shortchange everything else: your work, your friendships, your self-expression, your creative life.
The two handshakes. How every relationship forms a spoken agreement and an unspoken one—and how the unspoken agreement comes to hold an Erotic Contract that shapes what you allow yourself to want.
How the contract is enforced. Not through demands, but through the softest mechanisms in a relationship: outsourcing your desire to your partner, performing wanting that isn't authentically yours, one person carrying all the wanting for two, resentment when keeping the contract costs too much, and the deferral that tells a single person their aliveness needs a partner to be legitimate.
Sovereignty is not separateness. This work is not about needing your partner less. Two people each at home in their own aliveness have someone to actually meet. Desire requires a self to desire from. And for those without a partner right now, sovereignty is the ground the next relationship stands on.
A guided practice: Reading Your Contract. I guide you step by step through a private journaling and body-based practice—recalling a moment of holding back, feeling where it lives in your body, letting it speak, and then writing your contract down, line by line. You'll mark which lines you wrote and which were written for you, strike the line that limits you the most, and write one amendment to live by for the coming month.

Everyone. Women, men, and non-binary folks. Straight, queer, and any sexual identity, including those who identify as asexual. Partnered, dating, single, lovers, situationships. The dynamics differ by history and culture, but the contract is universal.

Lisa Blair, Ph.D.
Lisa Blair is a scholar, writer, and educator whose work examines intimacy and love within contemporary social contexts. Her doctoral research reconceptualized intimacy through a transdisciplinary lens, examining how global complexity, AI, and digital culture have reshaped romantic partnerships over the past two decades.
Her work has been published in World Futures, the Journal of Conscious Evolution, and the award-winning International Handbook of Love (Second Edition). She teaches and consults internationally on emotional intimacy and conflict resolution for couples.
Lisa and David Bedrick co-host In Two Deep, a podcast about emotional intimacy, conflict, and connection from a depth psychological perspective.
